Sai even admonishes Shindou's outburst about girsl not playing Go by telling him that women played Go very well even a thousand years ago.

Music: I skipped a lot of it, but yes, some of the end credit music was particularly nice.

YehudaYehuda Berlingerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16038826060312027387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9319479.post-1163349717280132422006-11-12T18:41:00.000+02:002006-11-12T18:41:00.000+02:00Nice review.I found the subtle differences about J...Nice review.

I found the subtle differences about Japanese culture particularly interesting--assiming it's reasonably authentic. There's a certain degree of expected respect between people of different social levels, even younger to older student. But at the same time, people get angry/annoyed very quickly, even to their elders.

Women are portrayed as second-class citizens in the series (Hikaru's mom, Touya's mom, Akari, etc) with little of what we would call politeness shown to them, but again that may be culturally proper.

One thing you didn't mention was the music. The soundtrack is 2 full cds of professionally and beautifully composed symphonic tracks. While they are re-used throughout the series, some of the pieces are incredibly well done. The track called Kami no Itte (Hand of God, or The Divine Move) strikes a deep and perfect emotion for the sense of wonder as you begin to see the unknown come slightly more clearly into focus, like looking into deep space.

The series is starting to appear on DVD at Amazon, but I would urge anyone who watches it to use the subtitled mode and not the dubbed mode; the original voices are excellent.ektedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02200891099572736360noreply@blogger.com
