Linkety Link

Ars Compendium is running a series of reviews of board games. Someone named Rebecca Lanham. The site gives me JS errors on both Firefox and IE. The board games she has chosen so far are insipid and they don't look like they are likely to get any better. Someone should inform her about better games; I would, but I can't get the site to work properly.

In better news, Thomas Robertson is in the midst of a series on game immersion. Follow along with it, as it looks good.

And a company named Zapit is the latest to want to merge board games with electronics. It has produced Game Wave which is supposed to reproduce board games as DVDs. It comes with a console and six handheld controllers. All of the current games are trivia or dice rolling games.

lilspektre: Ah so.

Even a game like Chutes and Ladders or Candyland can be made better by giving each player two pawns and having them decide which pawn to move after they roll/spin.

Try to avoid games, even for little kids, that involve nothing more than rolling or picking and following the instructions. All that that teaches is gambling - the excitement of winning by luck.

lil: Sorry about the messy link that I sent you to. I should have warned you.

A good place to get most of the games mentioned is on timewellspent.org (do tell them that I sent you). They deliver quick and cheap, and they are great guys.
